With the development of the tunneling technology the tunnel boring machines have been widely used in many different kinds of projects worldwide, such as the Brenner Base Tunnel in the Austrian Alps. The comprehensive tunneling boring machines features a rotating drilling head, which can remove materials and secure the excavated tunnel with rock bolts, grouting or prefabricated segments of reinforced concrete, according to the different kinds of constructions. Even if the tunnel boring machines are frequently used and have many advantages, they also have shortcomings. The most important point is the visibility restrictions. In mechanized tunneling, the view to the face is obstructed by the cutter head. Recently, Austria has developed a camera system for boring machines used in tunnel constructions, which can solve this problem perfectly. The camera is mounted in the disc housings and provides high resolution images and color-coded relief presentations of the entire face. It allows mineral composition, spatial position of stratifications, and depth of cavities to be determined, which allows an assessment of the structural analysis and verification of the geological model, ensuring continuous tunnel boring free from disruption.
Now with the help of this new camera system and the effective self drilling ground anchor system , the tunneling construction is becoming more and more quick and efficient. Self drilling anchor system has been used for many years and it is also always developing. It has good supporting effect for the construction of tunnels. Combining drilling, grouting and anchoring together, this system can availably reduce the raw material waste and increase the construction efficiency. Besides, the system can be bonded with the sounding soil and rock after grouting, so that the stability of the entirety is greatly enhanced. Together with the new camera system, the tunnel construction industry will come into the new period of great development.
